Ashley Clark has a cute write-up on
about The Banshees of Inisherin. Usually when someone writes “the film deals with…” I immediately yawn, but here, maybe because I’ve watched the movie and completely agree, it works:[The film] intelligently picks at knotty tendrils connecting received notions about what it means to be a “good”, “nice”, or “interesting” person, and the function of art in society. Then, of course, there’s the friendship death stuff.
The question of a person’s “goodness” or “niceness” was where the film got the most intriguing. Colin Farrell’s journey from a harmless dumbass to, well, something else, is something to behold.

I get to randomly listen to TSF Jazz every day for five or ten minutes, and they’re fun minutes.

It’s time for Tata Steel (remember?) - the Netherlands chess tournament opened on Friday. The Guardian’s coverage included a particularly cool rumour which others have already picked up on: that the uber-prodigy Alireza Firouzja might be looking for a career away from chess, in fashion design. While it seems highly implausible, the idea is nonetheless a welcome transgression. And though his wardrobe does not reach Daniil Dubov’s heights, his casual style has its moments. Here are three of them.
